Accessible Southwark Apartment

Our client, a tech entrepreneur and angel investor, approached us to refurbish his ‘bunker.’ A space he referred to as being very practical while he focused on his entrepreneurial adventures but not design-led. To help correct this we provided a fully holistic interior design service, specifying new flooring, wall finishes, and designing a bespoke kitchen and furniture.

Being in a wheelchair full-time and with limited mobility in his hands, we incorporated technology and accessible design considerations into the apartment to increase his independence.

This included voice activated window dressing and lighting controls, a smooth floor so it feels gentle when he rolls across it in his wheelchair and clever but practical acoustic barriers - such as heavy wool curtains that act as room dividers to give our client privacy from his support team.

Our client is also a Star Wars fan, and this inspired us to look to the Atomic Age of Design that came out of the US in the 1950s. Referencing this, we specified a variety of mid-century furniture pieces and space-age lights. The Salvage Yard in Star Wars and the metal cladding on the spaceships inspired the kitchen design, and we worked with a bespoke maker to fabricate the sheet metal effect to the doors.

The result is an imaginative property holistically designed to meet our client’s very specific accessibility requirements.

Be Practical.  Be Thoughtful.  Be-Kin.
